An Exclusive Q&A with Celebrity Stylist Michael Bassolino

How long have you been a fashion stylist?

Seven years

What led you to your career as a fashion stylist?

I kind of fell into it.  I was dating a girl who introduced me to shopping and before I knew it her friends and family were asking me for advice.  Advice turned into consulting and styling.

What do you love most about your job?

I love helping people feel good about themselves…I’m truly passionate about it.

What is a typical day like for you?

I don’t have a typical day per say and that’s one of the perks to my career.  I could be styling someone’s closet in South Beach until 2am, in Tampa the next day shopping at a mall and doing a photo shoot for a magazine in New York the following day.  It’s always all over the board.  I never liked the 9-5 in corporate America so this kind of schedule is awesome for me.

Why would a non-celebrity professional woman work with you?

She may not have been exposed to the clothing lines or stores that would complement her style, have a hard time identifying her style or not have the time/patience to shop for herself.

What are the benefits to working with a stylist/image consultant?

I maximize time for my busy clients.  I also save them money because I don’t let them buy items they will never wear.  Most importantly, as one client stated, “I bring out the hotness in people.”

If you could pick 3 fashion must-haves that every professional woman should own, what would they be?

Tory Burch -Pointy Black patent kitten heel closed toe shoes

Banana Republic – Charcoal or Black ‘Sloan fit’ slacks (the stretch in them makes them comfy all day)

Elie Tahari- Black suit

What are the top 3 tips you offer new and old clients?

  • Don’t buy something just because it’s on sale. It’s not how much it cost; it’s how much you’ll wear it.
  • Get your clothes altered. Jeans, pants, jackets, t-shirts, button downs. Most people’s wardrobes are filled with pieces that don’t fit correctly. Spend the extra time and a few extra dollars and have your clothes altered by a good local tailor.
  • The only RULE in fashion is Be true to yourself. Don’t follow trends if it’s not you.  There is no wrong or right in fashion… it’s completely subjective! Wear what makes you feel good about yourself and makes you happy!

If you could spend one day with one fashion icon dead or alive who would it be?

I’m happy spending time with myself. I am my own fashion icon.
